There is only one Miklós Vámos. The title of his superb novel from the year 2000 Mothers Are Not Chosen by Election actually hints at the essence of his amazingly rich and prolific career, as the secret to the writer's unflagging popularity lies in the uniqueness of the work and of the personality. Unwilling to embrace passing fashions or ephemeral trends, Vámos can be thought of as an obstinate author who does not fit neatly into any classification. He always relies on his inner voices and standards, rather than external ones, and thus never abandons his enormous and loyal readership, who know more or less what to expect from the next book. Nevertheless, the identifiably distinct narrative style and plot structuring always offers an unexpected surprise in each new release.
Vámos thus hardly requires any further introduction for devotees of contemporary Hungarian literature: as the author of works like Protest Song and Sing a song, Ab Ovo, as well as Lame Dog and The Book of Fathers, he has been one of Hungary's most popular writers for decades. And this is not even to mention his works as a dramatist or his memorable television productions. The presence of his invited guests, his fellow outstanding artists Péter Rudolf and János Karácsony, ensures that this undoubtedly highly anticipated evening will be a thrillingly polyphonic one.
