Jazz Spring

5-7 May 2023

Proof of the success of the Jazz Spring festival lies in the fact that the event is the same age as Müpa Budapest itself – this year marks the 19th occasion it brings the stars down from the jazz heavens. The first weekend of May gives us a chance to delight in one international star and two female artists just on the cusp of stardom. All three of them with conquer us with their voices, extraordinarily powerful personalities, setting an example with their very selves.

Arriving at the Festival Theatre on 5 May accompanied by the Darrell Green Quartet will be Camille Thurman. Thurman now places equal importance on the saxophone and her vocals, demonstrating on both instruments the reason why Wynton Marsalis noticed her and invited her to joint the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She is bringing material from her latest album, Fortitude, to share at the concert.

Judith Hill enchanted the audience at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall four years ago, a feat she is certain to repeat there on Saturday, 6 May. All the more so because, as she herself reveals, she is now even more able to authentically represent everything that is really important to her than she was then, showing us the real Judith Hill: dazzling, yet very human. With her material Baby, I'm Hollywood, she stays close to funk, with a touch of soul and a bit of rock worked in as well.
