We are delighted to be able to welcome back to Müpa Budapest one of the world’s most successful orchestras. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which turns 125 this year, raised the roof at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in 2021. Their virtuouso soloist, the superb Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya, was once the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition held in Brussels. Originally a bassoon player, the talented young Czech musician Petr Popelka has been chief conductor of the ensemble since 2023. Wagner intended the first piece of the programme, the early Faust Overture, to be the introductory movement of a planned Faust Symphony. The other two works have ties to Budapest and Vienna, respectively. Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 premiered in Budapest, and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D major for the Left Hand was composed for the Austrian Paul Wittgenstein.
