The voice of Nikoletta Szőke is one of the vital treasures of Hungarian jazz, rightly recognized and sought after throughout the world. Her quartet’s latest album appears on renowned Japanese label Atelier Sawano, a significant success in itself that will help the group get its music heard on the world’s top jazz stages. The series of concerts the quartet played in Japan in 2010 proved an important phase in its career, particularly its appearance at the Blue Note club in Tokyo. Szőke took up s...erious musical studies only after graduating from high school, as a pupil of the renowned Hungarian jazz singer Gábor Winand. Scarcely six months later she was giving a concert in Hungarian Radio’s Studio 6, which was broadcast live nationwide. In July 2005 she won first prize in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, a contest over several rounds culminating at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. As the youngest competitor in the field, she also received the audience award at the same event. Thanks to this victory she was the first Hungarian singer to receive an invitation to perform in New York in January 2006, where she gave two successful concerts at the Hilton New York and Dizzy's, the jazz club at the Lincoln Center that has Wynton Marsalis as its artistic director. Since January 2009 she has been on the roster of Japanese label Atelier Sawano, which put out her second album A Song for You last January. Such has been Szőke’s success in the island nation that she has signed a contract with the label for five albums in total, while both her albums recorded so far were issued in the United States in May 2009.
