Mihály Sipos – violin, László Porteleki – violin, Péter Éri – viola, guitar, Dániel Hamar – double bass, gardon During their thirty five year career, the Muzsikás group has become not only a metaphor for Hungarian dance house movement and Transylvanian peasant music but has proven world wide that Hungarian folk music is identical in terms of value to any other musical genre. They have given great concerts from Australia to Japan, from South Africa to North America, from New Zealand to England... and in distinguished concert halls such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elisabeth Hall, the Concertgebouw and Carnegie Hall. Their versatility is demonstrated by their many invitations to world music, jazz, alternative and serious music festivals. In recent years, they have enjoyed tremendous success with their folk music interpretations of works by Bartók and Kodály, a kind of classical–folk fusion, and have worked with the likes of Alexander Balanescu, Jenő Jandó, the Bartók and Keller String Quartets, the Danubia Symphony Orchestra and the French Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Some of their albums have represented original contributions to our musicological knowledge, particularly their collection of Transylvanian Jewish Hungarian folk music The rooster is crowing and their Bartók Album reconstructing Bartók’s collecting work. Homeward Bound was rated as one of the top hundred world music CDs which Simon Broughton described as the record on which traditional Transylvanian music, on the brink of extinction, is presented with the ultimate splendour. We eagerly look forward as always to their next concert which as usual will involve some superb guest musicians and dancers.
