In 2010, the Budapest Wagner Festival will present a new production of Tristan and Isolde. Wagners’s opera, for which he also wrote the libretto, was premiered on June 10th 1865 at the Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater. It was not played in Hungary until November 28th 1901. When he worked on it, he had already presented the first two pieces of the Ring Cycle, but for this opera, he created a work of immense power from an ancient Celtic myth, driven by a heady mixture of infinite feeling and c...hivalrous virtues. Our exhibition presents some moments from the opera’s century and a half history, from the Romantic tragedy of forbidden love between Tristan the Cornish knight and the Irish princess Isolde.
