Art Brut means crude and brutal art. This category includes works by psychiatric patients, children and people who have been pushed to the periphery of society. It would be wrong to call it the art of the insane. In truth, these are sincere creations, and as a result of the creative process, give the individual the opportunity for non-verbal expression of an emotional state. “This is art showing synthetic invention, it is devoid of the chameleon or imitative nature of cultured art”, wrote Jean D...ubuffet. But these works do not just reflect momentary feelings but give us an insight into the experiences of those suffering from mental illness, from hallucinations as well as their visions and thought processes. In early 2005, the Semmelweis University Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Clinic Creative and Artistic Therapy Workshop was opened, and with the support of the Moravcsik Foundation, it gave the opportunity for patients to do creative work, and for their works to be on occasion exhibited to the public at large.
