October 9: Magical India November 6: Morocco – West Africa November 27: Diverse Columbia December 18: Bells from the Sultan’s Court The music series and this exhibition are made possible by the Ethnosound world music instrument shop Our exhibition supplements the series of Saturday morning concert and instrument presentations in which children can encounter folk music from far flung parts of the globe and experience rarely seen instruments. The music of India is characterised by the si...tar, which is familiar in Europe and of Persian origin and the bamboo flute, the bansuri (favourite instrument of Krishna) with its six or seven holes. West Africa is explored through the percussion instrument of West Africa, the djembe, with its unique mushroom shape and characteristic sound. The woodwind instruments used by the native peoples of Columbia will also be heard in the Palace of Arts: the gaita has a pipe made from a hollowed out dried cactus and its upper part combines duck feathers and bees wax. The gamelan instruments of Indonesia comprise of various horizontally suspended gongs and tuned instruments hit with a stick, which the drum (kendang) holds together and directs.
