October 9: Wagner: Das Rheingold October 23: Mussorgsky: Boris Godunov November 13: Donizetti: Don Pasquale December 11: Verdi: Don Carlos Although everyone refers to it by its nickname – “The Met” –, very few music lovers are regular visitors. However, for the past few years, the New York Metropolitan Opera has expanded its auditorium into the virtual sphere, and created the possibility for hundreds of thousands to attend its performances: thanks to high definition satellite broadcasts, m...usic lovers can now enjoy performances at the Met in 44 different countries, simultaneously, as part of the “The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” programme. The wealthiest American families built the New York opera and in 1883 it opened with its first performance, Gounod’s Faust. In 1966, the Met moved to the Lincoln Centre, which like MUPA is a multi-functional cultural hub now being modernised and further expanded. The opera gives about 220 performances a year, and from mid September to late May, offers 27 operas, with four being played per week. Our exhibition provides an insight into the story of Met performances, and also supplies some technical background that will make the visitor’s experience even more complete.
