Handel has always been ranked among the giants of music history, a view Beethoven himself illustrated with the quote chosen as the title of the chamber exhibition being shown in conjunction with this year’s composer’s marathon. What counts as a relatively new development, however, is the fact that we no longer compulsively compare this immortal son of Halle to the mighty figure of Johann Sebastian Bach, who shares the same birth year, just as we no longer restrict ourselves to performing and knowing only a dozen or so compositions from his impressively rich oeuvre. The texts and images displayed on the boards present almost every manifestation of this impressive and grandiose personality, the defining stages of his creative career, and his favourite genres, providing a useful way to spend the intervals before and between concerts.
