Exhibition from the Péter Fülöp Collection at the Budapest Mahlerfest The music of Gustav Mahler has only really become popular in the past few decades and this metamorphosis is well reflected in the history of recordings. Looking at the 1952 edition of the World’s Encyclopaedia of Recorded Music we find just twenty Mahler recordings. There were no recordings at all of four of the symphonies (Nr. 3, 6, 7, 8), half the early songs or Das Klagende Lied, and the First Symphony is only represented ...by a single account. Today the situation is very different. Looking at a German internet shop, we find 133 Mahler recordings. (This number includes the same recordings with various performers, while many rare or not official recordings are not available.) The First Symphony has been recorded up till now on 251 different LPs, CDs and DVDs. In 1952, the Sixth Symphony had not been recorded at all, in 2007 there are 129 versions registered on www.mahlerrecords.com site. This exhibition presents the first official recordings of Mahler’s works as well as the records themselves. (The world “official” is important because there were a number of earlier concert recordings which were made without the performer’s knowledge or consent and released in pirate editions.) The first Mahler record dates from around 1920: this acoustic recording on a 78 rpm disc featured two songs sung by Grete Stückgold. This was followed in 1924 by the Second Symphony that was captured by eleven 78s. The first recording of the Fourth Symphony took place in Japan in 1930. The first recording of the Sixth Symphony is from much later, 1953. These early versions have been transferred to CDs, but the exhibition presents the original first edition recordings on 78s and subsequently, on microgrooves.
