The Palace of Arts will again welcome the New Year with Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation. As before, besides the music there will also be an exhibition for our guests to enjoy. The tradition was started in 2008 and each year, we will be presenting art works by children of different nationalities. This year, we have an exhibition of drawings by the junior students from the Brussels College St Michel, which was formed in 1600. The children did not know Haydn’s work until the Palace of Arts a...sked them to get involved with it. They listened to the work several times, discussed it and selected motifs to depict the animals (birds, fish, mammals, insects), the sun and stars, and natural and human landscapes. They then made them into pictures. The children worked using different techniques such as cutting and sticking and employed a variety of materials from crayons, to acrylic and watercolours. As they worked, they were given help with the compositions by their teachers. The aim of the series of pictures in the foyer is to reinforce the visitor’s feeling that creation is a source of joy for both artist and viewer, be it a child or a musical genius.
