People must have thought Pablo Berger was crazy when he decided to direct a black-and-white silent film based on the Grimm brothers' Snow White in 2011. The possibilities of modern silent film may have been in the air as Michel Hazanavicius swept the board with The Artist, a film about a silent movie actress, at the 2012 Academy Awards. By contrast, however, Berger's film is much more provocative, cheeky and original - this is far from a respectful tribute to the greats of cinema. His work... is murderous in its humour, in turns exploring bitter melodrama, parody and the interplay of styles, thereby rising high above the natural tabloid tendencies of the mainstream media.
The story begins in the late 1910s and ends in 1929, around the time when silent films gave way to "talkies”. Berger finds a way to capture the development of imagery and composition over this dynamic decade in cinema. (Not to mention the fact that the visuals also spilled over into modernity with the advent of the art deco style.) It is a particular joy for the Spanish that Snow White is also a send up of españolada, a strange breed of films that insisted on displaying all the clichés and tourist kitsch that became associated with Spain. (Similarly to the whips cracking at Hungarian goulash parties, the unlabelled fire-water described as "pálinka”, and the machine-embroidered Hungarian patterns around the necks of thigh-slapping folk singers.) So no one should be surprised by the appearance of - dwarf - bullfighters. Visitors to this instalment of Müpa Cinema will will have to wait to find out if the moment of truth will come.
The series is made possible with the support of the Embassy of Spain and the Cervantes Institute.
