Collectors of Eastern art particularly prize Japanese netsuke, those beautifully carved miniatures from wood or bone. These artefacts were originally functional in nature. There were no pockets in Japanese kimonos so men carried practical objects on a chord, and wrapped this chord under their kimono belt, and attached the netsuke to one end as a kind of counterbalance. Of Chinese origin, they became widespread during the Edo period in Japan (1603–1867) and served to hold objects worn on the belt...: containers for medicine, tobacco, pipes, purses, writing materials, chopsticks and keys. They also spread because the people under the dominion of the samurai order were not allowed to carrying any noble metal or jewellery, unless they were nobles themselves. As a result, the netsuke became a clothing ornament. The selection of Moró Antik presents nearly fifty netsuke. The displayed objects were made between 1660 and 1880 from various materials. These little statues are carved from wood (box wood, cherry tree and ebony tree), bone (mammoths and elephants) and walrus tusks, and include various animals (snakes, monkeys, frogs, rats, oxen), people (fishermen, beggars, circus artists), Buddhist holy figures and some luck gods. On some, we can see gold, silver and bronze intarsia.
