The French ballet dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre was described already by his own contemporaries as the “Shakespeare of Ballet”. The reformer of modern dance art was born on April 29th 1727. And since 1982, following the initiative by UNESCO, this date has been World Dance Day each year. If there is such a thing as ephemeral material in art, then it is certainly embodied by dance. It is natural that the need to preserve and record the experience has existed since time immemorial.... We can see cave paintings depicting early dance. Subsequently we find paintings, drawings and statues, then photographs, films and now digital technology. But the pictures at this exhibition are not documents. Today, when virtually everyone has in their pocket a mobile phone that can take photographs, this collection shows graphically that the secret of art is not access to technical devices. Certain photographers have created works of art, which have withstood the test of time. The predecessor to our exhibition was seen forty years ago in the Hungarian National Gallery but its fundamentals were gathered by photographic artist János Eifert in 1998, primarily from dance pictures by contemporary artists as well as recording in the Hungarian Photography Museum, the Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute, the Collection of Contemporary Photography and from private collections. The continuously expanding, enchanting material is the property of the Association of Hungarian Photographers.
