Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) is one of the most important figures in 20th century Czech music. He left to posterity over four hundred works, including six symphonies, fifteen operas, fourteen ballets as well as orchestra, chamber, vocal and instrumental pieces. These compositions betray a diversity of influences but while strictly classical in construction, they are nevertheless written in the spirit of modernity with great freedom. The composer soon achieved fame with his innovations in both Am...erica and Western Europe, where he was forced to live for the last third of his life, initially fleeing the German invasion and then after Czechoslovakia turned to communism. His ashes could only be returned to his homeland from Switzerland some twenty years after his death. Since then, he has reassumed his rightful position in his homeland and it is no accident that when the Czech Republic takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union in 2009, its representative of serious music will be Bohuslav Martinů. At this year’s Budapest Spring Festival, the Czech Republic will greet Budapest with a number of programmes, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and several chamber ensembles will introduce Hungarian audiences to this fine Czech composer. This musical event is made all the richer by this exhibition of spectacular visual and multi-media material which the Prague Martinů Institute has lent for the exhibition, with the help of the Bohemia’s Circle of Friends and the Budapest Czech Centre.
