The largest and most extensive Mahler collection in the world, including countless unique and rare recordings, belongs to Péter Fülöp, a Hungarian currently living in Canada. As part of the Budapest Mahler Festival, an annual exhibition presents the recordings of the Mahler works on the programme. This means that this year’s that visitors can listen to historic gramophone, vinyl and CD recordings of Symphony No. 1, Songs of a Wayfarer and the Rückert-Lieder. The music of Gustav Mahler has only ...really become popular in the past few decades and this metamorphosis is well reflected in the history of recordings. Looking at the 1952 edition of the World’s Encyclopaedia of Recorded Music we find just twenty Mahler recordings. There were no recordings at all of four of the symphonies (Nr. 3, 6, 7, 8), half the early songs or Das Klagende Lied, and the First Symphony is only represented by a single account. Today the situation is very different. Looking at a German internet shop, we find 133 Mahler recordings. (This number includes the same recordings with various performers, while many rare or not official recordings are not available.) The First Symphony has been recorded up till now on 251 different LPs, CDs and DVDs. In 1952, the Sixth Symphony had not been recorded at all, in 2007 there are 129 versions registered on www.mahlerrecords.com site.
