The 120th anniversary of László Lajtha’s birth was celebrated on 30 June 2012 and the 50th anniversary of his death will be commemorated on 16 February 2013. Today most people consider Lajtha as an ethnomusicologist and only a few know that he was one of the greatest Hungarian composers of the first half of the 20th century. During his lifetime he was referred to - especially in France - together with the decade older Bartók and Kodály as one of the ‘three great Hungarians’. Due to his oppositio...n to communism his works were rarely played in Hungary after 1948, but he was the first Hungarian composer to be elected a corresponding member of the French Academy in 1955. In recent decades his unique oeuvre has begun to be rediscovered. The Palace of Arts and the Hungarian Heritage House organised a joint exhibition to commemorate the two Lajtha anniversaries. The first part of the exhibition (already shown in the spring of 2012) presents the composer’s body of work in 8 installations. In the second part, which is now added to the previous exhibition to commemorate the anniversary of Lajtha’s death, visitors can have an insight into the key elements of the ethnomusicologist’s oeuvre in another 4 installations. The 12 installations include around 100 documents: photographs, letters, manuscripts, programmes and sheet music covers. Several of them are exhibited for the first time. Exhibition materials, on display from January 9 to February 3, 2013, were selected by music historian Emőke Solymosi Tari, who has been the researcher of László Lajtha’s works for over two decades.
