The 120th anniversary of László Lajtha’s birth is celebrated on 30 June 2012 and the 50th anniversary of his death (in 1963) will be commemorated on 16 February 2013. To mark the occasion, the joint exhibition of the Palace of Arts and the Hungarian Heritage House will open before the opening concert of the Budapest Spring Festival. (The programme of the opening concert also includes a Lajtha-opus: the six-movement suite version of his film score Hortobágy.) Today most people in Hungary consid...er Lajtha as an ethnomusicologist and only a few know that he was one of the greatest Hungarian composers of the first half of the 20th century, who was not only a distinctive figure in ethnomusicology, but also very active in music pedagogy and international cultural diplomacy. During his lifetime he was referred to - especially in France - together with the decade older Bartók and Kodály as one of the ‘three great Hungarians’. Due to his opposition to communism his works were rarely played in Hungary after 1948, but he was the first Hungarian composer to be elected a corresponding member of the French Academy in 1955. In recent decades his unique oeuvre has begun to be rediscovered. The aim of the exhibition, opening on 16 March, is to give a glimpse into a few important moments of Lajtha’s life by presenting valuable and rarely accessible documents. Over sixty documents are featured at the exhibition, including mostly photographs, letters, manuscripts, programmes and sheet music covers. Exhibition materials were selected by music historian Emőke Solymosi Tari, who has been the researcher of László Lajtha’s works as a composer for over two decades.
