“Bartók’s masterpiece, Bluebeard's Castle has been a stimulus to me since the 1960s. On a request by the Helikon Publishing House, I then made the first graphic version as a book illustration of the play. Over the decades I have drawn a large number of different variations of this evergreen theme, including a graphic screenplay. The eternal conflict between the opposites, the black and white, the positive and the negative. The conflict stemming from the fundamental difference between men and wom...en is fate. Béla Balázs’s symbolic story suggests Art Nouveau style but the passions are authentic. With some self-examination, you can also discover in yourself the true tension, the duality that represents the basis of this tale. I construed the pages of the book as doors, and this structure follows the events. The doors as dramatic nodes surround the psychic process occurring between the two protagonists. It has been clear since the very first minutes that passions, emotions should be expressed with colours. The rhythm of subsequent graphic pages is built up of the contrasts of blue, red, white and black colours. The end, the apotheosis, the gold suggested by Judith’s crown and mantle, and the black straining behind them close the hopeless story. The play is composed of the rhythm of a narrated plot, of images of the castle, of Judith and the Bluebeard and, finally, of recalled images of past mistresses. The choreography of this slow flowing play reminds me of a remote echo of the Japanese Noh theatre, like the Japanese influence appearing in the art of painting at the turn of the century. The secret hints to the symbols behind opening and closing doors and, finally, the crown and mantle may seem to be clichés but the eternal repetition of stereotypes, faithfulness and cheating, negation and the will to know and to learn bring about a kaleidoscope-like series of unrepeatable situations.” János Kass (1927 - 2010)
