The development of modern piano construction is the result of several centuries of evolution. Its antecedents – the clavichord and harpsichord, which produce far less sound and possessed far fewer possibilities of dynamics – were widely known in the 15th century. The Hungarian piano building industry began to develop in the 1880s. At that time, there were several superb workshops in Budapest and Bratislava. Without question, the leading piano builder of the century was Lajos Beregszászi, some of... whose innovations were taken up by world’s most famous factories, Bösendorfer and Steinway. Real development occurred in the early 1900s and several Hungarian instrument factories were founded then. The most attractive looking pianos emerged from the Endre Thék furniture and piano factory, while the Music Piano Factory directed by Károly Neuhold manufactured grand pianos and uprights which were admired for the technical excellence. With the massive growth in the number of keyboard instruments, the repair and service industry grew accordingly. Around the turn of the century, several distinguished piano makers settled in Hungary, primarily from Austria. Today, the Müller Piano Salon not only restores but also sells grand pianos and uprights, and it was founded by Rezső Müller snr who came from the Vienna Lauberger & Gloss Company to Budapest in 1898, in response to an invitation from the Hungarian Royal Opera House. The company is now into its fourth generation and it has received orders from the likes of Béla Bartók, Ernő Dohnányi and a great many of the other great Hungarian artists of the last hundred and ten years.
