The last concert of our series on keyboard instruments introduces a device which would be hard to describe based merely on its appearance and construction, given that the “soul” of this instrument resides in an – often quite tiny – apparatus that produces musical sounds and all manner of other noises through electronic vibrations. The production and assembly of sounds in this manner is known in Greek as synthesis, and the instrument is none other than the synthesizer. The first true synthesizers... were built almost 70 years ago, and scarcely 30 years later were already appearing in portable form. They quickly conquered popular music, and there is now scarcely a musical genre – including classical music – that does not make use of them. In this concert introducing the instrument, the young audience will be familiarised not only with the functioning and types of synthesizer, but with its many uses as well, and will even have the opportunity to take part in interactive musical composition led by Csaba Faltay.
