Formed in spring 2013, the Miskolc Ballet has chosen to adapt Shakespeare's classic tragedy for its first independent première. The performance asks the question: What is the difference between physical and platonic love, between desire and spiritual attraction? Can the conflict between body and soul be reconciled, or are they destined to be eternally at loggerheads? The legendary love which blossoms between the son and daughter of two feuding Veronese families proves an impossible love which will spell the end for both lovers.
"The defining element of the choreography is the duality that exists between the childlike playfulness and joy in the meeting of the two protagonists Romeo and Juliet, danced by Bálint Papp and Rita Tokai, and the black-clad figure of Death that constantly stalks them.” (Lilla Turbuly, Szinhaz.net)
"Almost imperceptibly we slip with the action from light to the realm of darkness: Tchaikovsky's flowing music is replaced by scratchy, warped electronic rhythms and melodies, the lights are dimmed, and the movements and breathing become more flustered. The playfulness and humour experienced thus far vanish as we enter the mysterious domain of the night, where everything is much more obtuse and impenetrable.” (Adél Hercsel, 7óra7)
"Love wrests us away from our natural circumstances of life, and thus also frees us from responsibility, an essential condition and necessary concomitant of the ability to love. Affection and friendship are the exclusive province of humankind, as they are independent of our specific sexual identity and physical nature. Physical love works in exactly the contrary direction: here, the body plays the main role and our male or female natures become the determining factor, reigning over our spiritual or rational selves.” (Noémi Kulcsár)
