The European Concert Hall Organisation launched the Rising Stars series in 1995. Its objective was to give young soloists and chamber musicians the opportunity to introduce their talents in the continent's most prestigious concert venues, helping them launch their careers on the path to global stardom. Müpa Budapest is also a member of the organisation, so the Hungarian audience too can get to know a new batch of talented and promising youngsters each year, and be party to wonderful musical experiences in the process. For this, the third evening of the 2014/15 season, a string quartet founded in 2007 and named after the Portuguese town of Matosinhos will perform classical pieces from the quartet literature, as well as an unusual work from an important Portuguese composer who was also one of Ferenc Liszt's last piano students. Vianna da Motta's Cenas nas montanhas (Mountain Scenes) bears the hallmarks of traditional Portuguese music.
Following the interval, another foursome will take to the stage in what promises to be a fascinating and exciting concert. Their members will not be playing string instruments, but the considerably younger saxophone. The Signum Saxophone Quartet was formed one year before its Portuguese counterparts by two German and two Slovenian youngsters in Cologne, and they have already played in such eminent venues as the Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie Munich and New York's Carnegie Hall. Their repertoire is remarkably broad and embraces almost the entire spectrum of polyphonic music, including both original works and adaptations.
