Peter Konwitschny is one of the most highly respected directors of German opera. He is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, the Leipzig and Hamburg free academies, and the Saxon music academy, and has been an honorary professor at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin since 2002. He has also been voted director of the year several times. His productions employ modern logic to attract attention to the complexities of musical theatre genres and the connections between them. "There is not a single sub-theme that can be grasped without connection to the whole, this is a good lesson given by opera,” he admits. He also holds the genre of the operetta in high regard as "the love of Lisa and Souchong in The Land of Smiles is just as strong as that of Tristan and Isolde”. It is with countless examples such as this that he welcomes the public to this presentation. The host for the evening will be excellent Hungarian musical historian Máté Mesterházi.
