J. S. Bach
Mass in B minor, BWV 232
It is a rare occasion when a world-renowned conductor of early music and his top ensembles perform twice at the same venue with different programmes within a short space of time. Philippe Herreweghe and the uniquely flawless choir and orchestra he leads now prepare to do exactly that at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. It also notable when a conductor records a given work on three separate occasions: in 2011, Herreweghe completed his third recording of Bach's Mass in B minor, featuring the same group of performers which we now have the chance to hear perform this towering achievement of European music. Enormous anticipation preceded the release of this latest recording, given that it features one of the world's leading Bach interpreters and finest early music vocal ensembles. Critical reviews of the CD in European music magazines unanimously described Herreweghe's reading of the score as characterised by stripped-down, subtle melodic lines, sensitive choices of tempo and lightness in delivery, all providing a wonderful experience for the listener, despite the complexity of the musical material.
The principal roles in this production are played by a choir with fantastic vocal abilities and an orchestra that performs on period instruments. The stars are aligned even more favourably in terms of the top-ranking soloists. Dorothee Mields, Thomas Hobbs and Peter Kooij are all regular participants in Herreweghe's numerous concerts and recordings, while countertenor Damien Guillon is a pupil of no lesser star than Andreas Scholl.
