We regret to inform you that Péter Nádas, a major figure in contemporary Hungarian and European literature, passed away on 26 August 2026. We wish to extend our condolences to the writer’s family, loved ones and readers.
At our Literarium Extra event on 22 September, we will honour the memory of Péter Nádas with the participation of András Forgách.
Tickets already purchased will automatically remain valid for the revised programme, or they may be refunded online or at the ticket office of Müpa Budapest until 10 September 2026.

Attentive readers of Péter Nádas find themselves seeing both the world and themselves differently than they did before – and there is no greater impact any work of art or body of works can achieve. This author reading by a living legend who fundamentally altered the language of prose with novels that shook the Hungarian literary world promises an exceptionally rare intellectual experience, with gripping texts – sweeping, disturbing and ruthless in their precision. Trio Passacaglia, who will also participate in the programme, derive their original sound from the unusual timbre and character of their vocals, as well as from the cello ‘singing’ along with them. The ensemble will perform passionate and virtuosic arias, a cappella lamentations, traditional religious music and Gregorian chants that reflect Nádas’s own spoken words.
We refuse to allow the magic of the evening to be dimmed by the sad news that arrived during rehearsals. This will be a unflinching and unforgettable farewell of a true genius; a step into the eternal, a departure in the wake of the dead friends of whom he wrote.
