Brahms

Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68

“Galánta school, my barefoot classmates: it was thinking of you that I wrote these. Your voices ring in my ears through 50 years of mist,” Zoltán Kodály wrote In the preface to his Bicinia Hungarica, in which he recalled the seven years of his childhood spent in the town. The Dances of Galánta heard in this programme evoke those folk-music traditions with brilliant orchestral colour. Béla Bartók’s Rhapsody No. 1 is likewise inspired by folk music; in it we discover the passionately powerful melodies of Transylvanian folk songs. The soloist for this piece is the exceptionally talented young violinist Gáspár Kelemen. In the second half of the concert, Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 will be performed – a work with a sweeping dramatic arc and a cathartic finale, and one of the most powerful pieces in the Romantic repertoire. The MÁV Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by one of the most highly respected conductors on the international music scene, the American Lawrence Foster.

The concert is presented as a collaboration between the MÁV Symphony Orchestra and Pilvax Films, as part of the All Star Series programme curated by Stathis Karapanos.
