He studied in Szombathely and then Budapest and in 1993, formed his own band, Equinox, with which he has performed and recorded continuously ever since. He is additionally a teacher at the jazz faculty of the Budapest Academy of Music, the founder and artistic director of the Szombathely Lamantin Improvisation Camp and the president of the Hungarian Jazz Federation, which was formed as a civil body in 1990. Puppet Theatre is a large-scale suite, a concerto grosso written for different orchestral groups in which elements of classical music, jazz and rock are forged into an organic unity. Individual movements of the suite reflect the characteristics of the styles presented by the three orchestral groups, and fuse and influence them. Free flying jazz improvisations follow the classical style movements, and bass guitar, jazz and percussion guarantee solid foundations for rock. “We are all participants in a puppet theatre. But it does matter whether we direct the puppets, or if we are ourselves the puppets or if we only watch the performance from among the audience”, says Tibor Márkus about his work.
