Joe Zawinul, one of the most influential innovators of jazz and keyboard playing, is sadly no longer with us since 11 September 2007. But the spiritual and musical legacy of Zawinul as an unparalleled composer and band leader is being kept alive by the group most qualified to do so. They are The Syndicate, the formation which brought the master’s vision to life in the latter part of his career: the belief that music, no matter where it comes from in the world, is all part of the same polished pr...ecious stone. The Zawinul Syndicate was formed after the break-up of legendary jazz fusion band Weather Report, since when it has become something of a legend itself. Thanks to the refined senses of the band leader, which helped him notice talent and the all-important ability to be a team player as well as an individual, the music world has become familiar with names such as Karim Ziad, Richard Bona, Gary Poulson, Amit Chatterjee, Sabine Kabongo, Linley Marthe and Nathaniel Townsley. Zawinul gave his penultimate concert on the 2 August 2007 in Veszprém, where the visibly ill musician played with saxophonist and former Weather Report associate Wayne Shorter for the first time in two decades. This remains a memorable moment for the Hungarian audience. Five years later, to mark the master’s 80th birthday, The Syndicate is preparing to present fans with yet another memorable event as it revives Zawinul’s compositions at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, some of which are rarely heard, as well as presenting some new pieces composed by current band members.
