Péter Gerendás’s album setting of György Faludy’s verses was published as part of the Helikon Audio Books series a few years ago. Ten verses were selected from one of the most celebrated Hungarian poets of the 20th century and this led to ten unique songs, performed by an array of Hungarian and international musicians. Péter Gerendás was fortunate enough to become a friend of Faludy’s. From their conversations and his memories of Faludy, he was able to draw the closest portrait of the poet in ...music. Their personal acquaintance meant Faludy’s verses had an even more profound effect on Gerendás. He selected poems including “Marrakesh”, “Chanson of Parisian Ladies”, “1956, You Star” (the year Gerendás was born) and the “Beggar’s Song.” This is not the first time that Péter Gerendás has explored literature on disc. One of his most interesting projects is his work inspired by Miklós Vámos’s “The Book of Fathers” which he composed faithfully to the book’s style. He has always placed great importance on his lyrics and he set about setting these poems with the same rigour with which he selected them. As we would expect from Péter Gerendás, these arrangements of Faludy poems reflect an intimate, refined musical world, and are a fittingly beautiful vessel for Faludy’s thoughts.
