Although the Spinning Room is usually referred to as a kind of opera, its genre is indefinable and extraordinary. Based on the note written on the music sheet it is ’A Hungarian Scene from Transylvania’. As a matter of fact, Kodály created a new Hungarian musical genre: a unique musical drama from the vocal gatherings of the Transylvanian spinning rooms. The lyrics were compiled by the composer; he practically created a garland of the folk ballads, popular customs and games which were originally... sung and acted out in spinning rooms. The musical world of the whole piece unfolds itself from Hungarian folklore, but while instrumental parts receive an emphasised role there, the musical material here is built almost exclusively on vocal parts. The plot was woven from the traditions of Székely villages, and it takes place in the spinning-room of a Székely village. In the production directed by Ferenc Novák, the whole musical material of the Kodály piece is accompanied by dance choreographies that rhyme with melodies, ballads and games appearing in the music.
