This edition of the Babel Evening series turns towards the night. Darkness and radiant brightness, dreams and visions. When consciousness and sleep slip into one: a time when anything can happen. The Tünet dance house band was inspired by the Sándor Weöres poem Az éjszaka csodái (The Miracles of Night). In their vision, there are merged vigilance and dreams, reality and imagination, figures drawn and living - recreating the world by the morning.
In a similar vein, the latest album from Mes...zecsinka is entitled Álomban ébren (Awake in a Dream) and is an outstanding example of Hungarian world music. In recent years, the band known for its light ethno-pop as taken a surprising turn towards emotionally disturbing arrangements and compositions. It is as if the inspiration for their name, the moon, has waned into nothing: night is followed by darkness, darkness is followed by night.
The solo performance by singer-guitarist Chris Eckman also poses a pressing threat of catharsis. His work - either as part of American band The Walkabouts or as a solo act - is filled with nocturnal sentiments, yet releases such light and elevation that the audience is sure to be captivated.
Finally, and continuing the good habits of our mixed-genre evenings, poetry cannot be refused entry to the Tower of Babel. Who else could we have to represent this art than the outstanding Attila József Prize-winning award poet Ferenc Szijj, a true 'specialist of the night'?
