McCoy Tyner – piano, Gerald Cannon – double bass, Eric Kamau Gravatt – drums, Joe Lovano – soprano and tenor saxophone It is a huge honour for the Palace of Arts, following Keith Jarrett’s performance in 2007, that we can welcome another cult figure in modern jazz piano. What makes this event all the sweeter is that McCoy Tyner who will celebrate his seventieth birthday in 2008 is bringing with him the great tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano who himself has a hardly less impressive career behind h...im. Born in Philadelphia, Tyner, who lived close to the great stylistic innovator Bud Powell, met up with John Coltrane while still a teenager and was the pianist with the epoch making Coltrane Quartet, alongside Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones from 1960 to 1965. Even back then, he was making solo recordings for the Impulse! label which featured strongly the influence of African culture. He then parted company with Coltrane and apart from a few collaborations (for example with Sonny Rolins, Stephane Grappelli and perhaps surprisingly Ike and Tina Turner) he worked with his own band pretty much continually. He played in a quartet with saxophonist Azar Lawrence, and in a big band and trio line up, but it was the influence of Coltrane that made the biggest impression on him. Later he proved that his compositional and playing style is unique which raises him to the pantheon of jazz greats. In 2007 he released a new solo album with the title McCoy Tyner Quartet. On these concert recordings made at the Oakland Yoshi club, Lovano features as saxophone soloist. This concert is one of the great highlights of the Jazz Spring 2008 festival and Tyner will be playing compositions from his new album as well as some of his classics from his distinguished past.
