New Orleans Swing 2013 has grown this year into more than simply a jazz festival for the entertainment of audiences. From 4 pm on the afternoons of 30 and 31 August, the Palace of Arts will be holding masterclasses in the Glass Hall, aimed primarily at professionals in the field of jazz. On 30 August, saxophonist and flautist Lew Tabackin – prior to his concert the following evening – presents a variety of possible approaches to improvisation on saxophone and flute with the aim of helping player...s develop improvisational skills and find their own individual voice. The artist will illustrate his explanations on the instruments concerned, with the support of the Szakcsi Jr. Trio, also his accompanists at the subsequent evening’s concert. At the masterclass on 31 August, John Allred, an American virtuoso of the trombone who features as the star of Friday evening’s New Orleans Swing concert, will take to the stage of the Glass Hall to demonstrate some of the tricks of the trade of trombone playing and offer those interested a glimpse into the secrets of his astonishing command of the instrument. He will be accompanied by the rhythm section of the Hungarian Swing Company in presenting examples of his musical craft. The masterclasses will naturally offer attendees the opportunity to pose questions to the artists related to the topics at hand. The masters welcome all players of wind instruments, be they experienced musicians, those just embarking on their careers, or students completing their studies. The masterclasses will be held in English. Presented by: Palace of Arts
