Bíró has grown into the best known Latin band in Central Europe. They anticipated the Latin musical revival of the nineties by many years and have toured with such masters as Carlos Santana, Al di Meola and the Gipsy Kings and released over two dozen records. There are no authentic Latin instruments or Latin style that they have not mastered and we might also go so far as to say there is probably no audience that they haven’t floored with their playing! Fans of literature may recognise the name Ambos Mundos from the life of Ernest Hemingway: this is the name of the still functioning hotel in which he wrote the first chapters of For Whom the Bell Tolls. Since 1995, a superb Cuban group have been working hard to ensure the words Ambos Mundos are memorable for Latin music lovers as well. This makes the evening complete: led by the marvellous Tania Nerfin, in the enthrallment of Yoruba rhythms and Cuban son, cha-cha-cha, bolero and rumba, we can fly from Africa to Europe via Cuba in the Latin Palace of Arts. The musical culture of Spanish and Portuguese speaking territories, which extend from the Iberian Peninsula to Latin America is far too expansive to be able to explore adequately in three days. Latin is a kind of verbal shorthand which admits such diverse styles as Spanish flamenco, Portuguese fado, Cuban bolero and rumba, Columbian cumbia, Puerto Rican plena, Brazilian samba and bossa nova or even the music of Peruvian and Chilean Indians. This festival though is sufficient to give a taste and present it: Latin music can launch you without dance steps into another freer and more fascinating world.
