The Jazz Spring festival takes on a new format in 2012. Rather than organising the concerts on four different days, this year Müpa plans to create a real festival atmosphere. On 13 May, starting at 4 pm and continuing until midnight, a series of outstanding jazz performers will play at the Festival Theatre and National Concert Hall. The performers represent the cream of local and international fusion and plugged-in jazz; moreover, all are connected in one way or another to the late Joe Zawinul, ...who was born eighty years ago. The opening of the festival will be grandiose, as renowned drummer and composer Gergő Borlai plays with American big guns Scott Kinsey on keyboards and Gary Willis on bass guitar. The three make up the Kinsey-Willis-Borlai Trio, certainly not a group formed just for the occasion. The trio’s album recorded in Los Angeles for release in 2012 contains brand new tunes, and it is material from this new record that the audience will hear at the Festival Theatre. Scott Kinsey noticed his Hungarian colleague’s energetic drumming long before Borlai had invited him to record and help mix his album entitled MMM. Borlai became close friends with Willis and Kinsey during this project and, as Borlai puts it: “Playing music with them is perfection itself.” All three musicians have a deep respect for Zawinul’s work. Kinsey produced the latter’s album Faces and Places, and was a friend of the late keyboard master for many years. Kinsey and Willis have formed a strong bond since the early ‘90s, at which time Kinsey joined Tribal Tech, the high-voltage jazz band founded by Willis and Scott Henderson.
