Kálmán Oláh, who is equally at home in jazz, folk and classical music, brings his Concerto for Symphony Orchestra & Jazz Band which promises to be a great occasion since besides the “jazz conductor” László Kovács and his Miskolc Symphony Orchestra, we’ll also get the chance to see the amazing trumpeter Gerard Presencer and a rhythm section of the highest international calibre. The second half of the concert is a showcase for Kálmán Oláh and his quartet and they’ll be playing amongst other things... his composition Always – In memoriam Dezső Ablakos Lakatos which won the first prize at the BMI Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composition Competition. It was performed at the Washington Kennedy Center prize giving ceremony by Jacky Terrason, John Patitucci and Terry Lyne Carrington. Kálmán Oláh has already made recordings with Patitucci as a member of the Szakcsi Generation, and has worked with Lee Konitz, Randy Brecker, Pat Metheny, Steve Grossman, Jack DeJohnette, Tommy Campbell, Ron McClure, Stefano Di Battista and Kenny Wheeler. In 1990, he jointly founded Trio Midnight with János Egri and Elemér Balázs and appeared at events such as jazz festivals in Umbria, Marciac, the Getxo Jazz Festival and the Belgium Ciney Jazz Nights. His records usually feature his own compositions and besides Hungarian label releases has made discs for the Korean Good International and Japanese MA Recordings. Since 2000, Kálmán Oláh has taught in the jazz faculty of the Budapest Academy of Music and in 2006 was awarded the Liszt Prize.
