János Egri – double bass, bass guitar, Kálmán Oláh – piano, András Mohay – drums Steve Grossman – soprano and tenor saxophone János Egri grew up in a musical family but taught himself jazz double bass and bass guitar, although he received a great deal of support and encouragement from Gábor Füsti-Balogh. Since he was seventeen he has been one of the busiest accompanying musicians on the Hungarian scene. He is closest to mainstream jazz and his first instrument is the double bass but he has a...lso contributed to many pop and world music productions. He is perhaps best known as a founder member of Trio Midnight: this brought him international fame but his collaborations with Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Gyula Babos, Ferenc Snétberger, Tony Lakatos and Mihály Dresch were also highly memorable. On his first solo album Moods, released in 1998, he plays primarily rock based jazz and shows just what a virtuoso bass guitarist he can be. He gravitated towards acoustic sound in 2001 on his album Soft Waves which perhaps shows his musicality to greatest effect. He has played with such international luminaries as Frank Zappa, James Moody, Tony Scott, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Lee Konitz, Hal Galper, Al Foster and Jasper van’t Hof. Tonight’s guest of the János Egri Trio will be Steve Grossman, who at the age of eighteen worked alongside the great Miles Davis. On the 1970s New York jazz scene, he stood out as a fusion jazz player before developing into a full blooded hard-bop saxophonist. Before forming his own trio in 1975, he worked with legendary drummer Elvin Jones and they made several recordings together. Both Steve Grossman and the János Egri Trio are committed players of rock flavoured jazz and mainstream styles, we can expect to hear their own compositions written in both styles.
