Ektar Ensemble: Evelin Tóth – vocals, Szabolcs Szőke – artistic director, gadulka, sarangi, Róbert Benkő – double bass, Dániel Kardos – guitar Dániel Váczi – sopranino and alt saxophone Szabolcs Szőke is at one and the same time a musician, a painter and a performance artist. He began his musical career in the late seventies with the Kolinda Group before founding the Makám Group with Zoltán Krulik in 1981. In 1994 he founded the Tin-Tin Quartet (from 2003 Quintet) which currently gives conce...rts all over Europe. His other regular band is Ektar who play contemporary improvisatory chamber music. They made their debut in autumn 2002 at the Győrfree Festival. Their repertoire is inspired by Balkan, Asian and African music culture but in their strictly structured compositions, we can recognise the influence of medieval music and various European folk styles. Ek-tar is the name of an Indian instrument, the word means: “one string”. This name refers to the fact that the four musicians express themselves to swell with their melodic shaping and rhythm that they manage to merge seamlessly as if playing on a single string. The Budapest Chamber Symphony was formed in 1993 and their primary goal was to nurture the noble traditions of Hungarian chamber music. The values espoused by the orchestra are built on the human and intellectual heritage of Leó Weiner and József Szász. They normally perform without a conductor and the backbone of their repertoire comprises the oeuvres of Haydn, Mozart, Liszt, Bartók, Stravinsky and Weiner. But they also perform contemporary music frequently and with great élan. The two ensembles are bringing several world premieres to this concert and new creative interpretations of musical traditions from Europe and beyond as well as typical jazz improvisations.
