The world-renowned pianist Béla Szakcsi Lakatos has explored every facet of the musical palette beyond jazz and classical music. In fact, he was the man responsible for first introducing fusion jazz to local audiences with bands like Rákfogó and later Saturnus in the 1970s. He then began collecting Gypsy folklore to adapt to the theatre stage. His first “Gypsy musical,” Red Caravan, débuted in 1975 and has since been followed by two further productions. Referring to his ground-breaking 2004 a...lbum, Na Dara!, Szakcsi says: “We could have called it Gypsy Jazz – even though some American musicians deny the existence of European jazz altogether. The biggest exception is the famous Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt. On hearing Django play, these purists admitted he was playing jazz, even though it was not quite their own style. The Belgian did not really play blues, yet his music had similar texture and emotional qualities to jazz. Admittedly, my music is more contemporary and originates from an entirely different Gypsy tradition. What makes Gypsy music unique is its incredible timing in combination with the freedom of rubato play. This amazes all jazz players who have listened to Gypsy bands. It is this combination that can also be heard on this album." For this very special evening, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos has invited a selection of guest musicians to help him perform pieces born of the combination of the two genres.
