Two musicians take to the stage this evening who have always been known for their experimentation and quest for the new. Although coming from entirely different backgrounds and taking different paths as artists, their meeting on the Palace of Arts stage promises to be an exciting musical event in itself. Gábor Gadó began his jazz career in Budapest under the tutelage of Gyula Babos, and rapidly rose to the front rank on the local scene. Cross Cultures, the debut record by his first group Joy, sh...owed the direction that this young guitarist would take: away from the ordinary and the mainstream, seeking out a different harmonic palette and always striving for his own sound. Before leaving for his second home in France, he toured throughout Europe with Nikola Parov (the composer of works including Sunlegend), and since founding his quartet in Paris has played with undiminished success all over Europe, and naturally in Hungary as well. A decade Gadó’s senior, David Liebman’s conquest of the jazz world began in Brooklyn. Listening to the music of John Coltrane as a child would have such a profound effect on Liebman that he would eventually file his historian’s degree away in a drawer and dedicate his life to jazz. Having played with Chick Corea, John Scofield, Al Foster, Charles Lloyd and Michael Brecker, he has earned himself a name in jazz that merits a mention in the same breath as these eminent artists. While primarily an exponent of progressive jazz in the modern creative idiom, he has also delved into chamber music on a number of occasions. Not content to confine himself to opportunities for collaboration with American musicians, he has also played with a number of leading figures on the European jazz scene, such as Bobo Stenson and Joachim Kuhn. A prolific author of books and articles, Liebman is also the holder of numerous prestigious music awards.
