If a concert by the Creative Art Trio at the Palace of Arts were not reason enough to celebrate, then another is the very presence of György Vukán. The founder of a musical award himself, Vukán is now the recipient of the Kossuth Prize in his 71st year, “in recognition of the impressively versatile, exceptional stylistic richness of his life’s work as a performer and composer, and his extraordinarily rich and far-reaching musical career, abundant in major international successes, as a highly inf...luential representative of contemporary music and jazz.” On this occasion, Vukán will demonstrate the accuracy of every aspect of this official citation as the bulk of the concert with the Creative Art Trio is given over to his own distinctive “cross-over” adaptations of the works of the evening’s other honoured artist, Claude Debussy, who was born 150 years ago this year. Although the figures are not quite as round, the evening is also notable for marking some other impressive anniversaries, as double bassist Balázs Berkes looks back on 51 years in partnership with the celebrated pianist, 22 of these spent as part of the unchanged line-up of the Creative Art Trio. Stéphane Belmondo – a relative of the famous French actor – has collaborated with a whole string of outstanding musicians in the quintet he founded with his saxophonist brother Lionel, among them Dee Dee Bridgewater, Horace Silver, Michel Legrand, DJ Fred Galliano, Yusef Lateef and Milton Nascimento. The trumpeter’s personal musical CV also includes the names of Mark Turner, Gil Evans, Lee Konitz and David Liebman. The title of his latest CD – The Same As It Never Was Before – might almost have been intended as a message to Vukán and the Creative Art Trio, given that Belmondo appeared as a guest of the trio on their album Endless Love in 2000: this concert will thus see a group of musicians playing together as past collaborators, and certainly not “as never before”.
