The New Orleans Swing Festival, which the Palace of Arts is organising for the third time, has evolved into one of the most important festivals for Central European classical jazz. Besides now classic compositions from the 1920s and 1930s, forties and fifties swing melodies also find a place in the repertoire, including – as a curiosity – Hungarian, Czech and Italian language swing pieces. The first evening sees trumpeter and vocalist Tamás Bényei’s widely admired band, Hot Jazz Band, the astou...ndingly virtuosic Czech pianist Jakub Safr who enjoyed a huge triumph at the 2005 Swing Festival and the nine member formation Shaffer’s Riffers. On Saturday, Jazz Steps led by the festival host, the clarinettist-saxophonist Zoltán Finok will be followed by one of the most successful of today’s Italian swing orchestras, the Milano Jazz Gang who evoke the hot atmosphere of the Louis Armstrong 1929 Chicago Hot Five sessions. The third day treats us to the grand master of traditional jazz saxophone, world famous Scott Hamilton with his quartet, who invites his audiences on a unique journey through time. Hamilton recreates the most important stylistic trends from America in the forties and fifties, evoking the sprit of the great saxophonists Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins.
