The Tetzepi “bigtet” is made up of fifteen musicians and resembles a traditional big band, despite playing swing in a very different fashion to the expected. The band mixes jazz with contemporary music, world music and improvisations; they combine the usual tension of big band music with the directness of a small combo. It is hard to describe in simple words the continually evolving, expansive music which perhaps resembles the restlessness of a major city. In its style, this, the most avant-gard...e band in Amsterdam, can meander between a big band and loose free jazz formation but always on its own path. To hear them is a surprise, to see them sheer delight. In 2008, Tetzepi are touring with their programme Seed. The idea for the songs comes from a musical, The Seeds by the Canadian composer John Korsrud which has also inspired Dutch musicians Corrie van Binsbergen, Marco C de Bruin, Jorrit Dijkstra and Hans Leeuw, as well as Italian Fabrizio Puglisi. The Flat Earth Society (FES) was formed in 1998 by clarinettist, saxophonist, keyboard player, composer and producer – earlier also an active architect – Peter Vermeersch who has worked with many leading international soloists and formations. He wanted to create a bigger band that could function on a larger, wider scale. This led to a big band which today contains fourteen standing members and its repertoire ranges from strictly notated music right the way across to free improvisation. Besides original works, they adapt and arrange pieces by other composers. The aim of FES, according to Vermeersch, is to be the most versatile and the most daring big band of all time!
