The brilliant twin jazz musicians, guitarist Roland Balogh and pianist Zoltán Balogh, were introduced to a professional audience at last year’s Showcase. Roland first picked up an instrument at the age of six, following a family tradition under the tutelage of his father. His studies were accompanied by a string of accolades in competition from his teenage years onwards: at the age of 15, he won third prize in a competition at a national jazz festival playing together with his brother Zoltán, be...fore his discovery by a professional jury at a jazz guitar talent-spotting contest in Szolnok. Having studied under Gyula Babos at the Kőbánya Music Studio, he gained his most important distinction in 2009 when he was awarded the top guitar prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The Balogh brothers’ joint ensemble, the Finucci Bros Quartet, represents a kind of fusion revival, taking an equal interest in both old and new by blending elements of modern electronic jazz, bop and traditional swing. Accordingly, it draws on an impressive array of musical influences from the 1950s to the young stars of the present day, and audiences will hear echoes of George Benson, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, Biréli Lagrène and Kurt Rosenwinkel in the quartet’s work.
