The stars of this series are the “tools” of music: its instruments. Children will get the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments in the context of authentic live music and with the assistance of expert musicians. In this semester, visitors to the series get the chance to meet the most populous family of instruments, getting a flavour of the colourful world of percussion. The marimba is a percussion instrument suitable for playing melodies, a member of the idiophone family (wher...e sound is generated primarily by way of the instrument vibrating). Though its origin is disputed, it most likely originated in Africa, from where it was brought by slaves to Central America. The name of the modern marimba also refers to its African roots. Its arrangement of tuned hardwood bars is similar to that of the keyboard of a piano, with a resonator tube located beneath each bar. The wooden bars are sounded by striking with one or two pairs of mallets. In appearance the instrument resembles a xylophone, but it is greater in size and range.
