The piano is a polyphonic keyboard instrument with struck strings. Musical sounds are produced by metal strings stretched out within a soundbox, which are struck with small padded hammers attached to a row of keys. The sound from a piano is generated mechanically, its operation on a basic level being simple compared to other instruments and relatively easily and quickly mastered. Another reason for its popularity is that a player can play several parts on it at once. The piano had evolved into i...ts current form by the beginning of the 20th century. From the beginning, the instrument was an integral part of a jazz ensemble, both in a solo and accompanying role.
