The stars of this series are the “tools” of music: its instruments. Children will get the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments in the context of authentic live music and with the assistance of expert musicians. In this semester we once again return to the world at large, introducing children to the folk music and rarely seen or heard instruments of various parts of the globe at Saturday morning concerts and subsequent presentations of musical instruments. The kaval is a woo...dwind instrument of Persian origin, very widely prevalent in Balkan folk music, which passed through Arab hands into the Balkan peninsula. Generally it is made of bone or hardwood, and very richly decorated. Similarly to the flute, sound on the instrument is produced when the player blows across a sharpened edge at one end. The central section of the kaval contains eight playing holes, while the lower third contains a further four holes which are not fingered, known by kaval players as “the Devil’s holes.” (Source: folkinfo.hu) Our partner in producing this series is the Ethnosound world music instrument shop.
