This season of concerts and demonstrations will introduce children to folk music from various regions of the world, and instruments most people have never seen or heard before. Like the other forms of pan pipe, the Andean siku consists of a row of closed-bottomed pipes of various lengths tuned to produce different notes. They are made from a type of bamboo known as tacuara, with the natural knotting of the reeds creating the closed ends of the pipes. The pipes are held together by strips cut fro...m this same bamboo and tied horizontally. The interesting thing about the siku is that the entire diatonic scale is spanned by two rows of pipes, which were traditionally played by two musicians. Today, the two rows are often arranged in steps to allow it to be played by a single person. Presented by: Palace of Arts
